This week’s edition of Shoestring Magazine features a column I wrote answering the horary question, “Should we marry on the resort island we love, or closer to home?” I compare the two options and answer her secondary question as well: “Which will save us more money in the long run?” (If the story sounds familiar, it’s because I used this question to illustrate my blog post on stationary significators in this post. It’s the second example shown.)

Marry close to home or farther away?

  1. I would use different significators for this question, but funnily enough, came up with the same advice as Christine.

The querent is ruled by Saturn in the first and the Moon in Leo, so her concerns are between practicality and what she truly loves (and wouldn’t the Moon in Leo love an up-scale wedding!). We see this again as Mercury, ruling Saturn, is retrograde. Saturn and Mercury are in mutual reception and disposit the entire chart – she is waffling.

I’d select the 4th house for her home base. Mars exalted in Capricorn is there, which gives a very strong impetus and grounding. The island venue to me is the 9th house. There are no planets in the 9th, but Venus exalted in Pisces rules it, showing her sentimental attachment to the place. Mars in the 4th is stronger than Venus in the 6th, so I think that practicality may win out and that she will stay closer to home… unless, of course, she is really able to get a great deal on Martha’s Vinyard.

Venus has a close sextile to Mars, so it shouldn’t be too great a compromise either way. The Sun rules the 11th house Moon and is conjunct Jupiter on the cusp of the 5th house, which is very nice (in Placidus, the Sun is under 3 degrees from the cusp). So, ultimately, I would also advise her to follow her heart.

  2. Interesting, you’re using the planet in/on the first in lieu of the lord of the first for the querent. Thanks for stopping by with this interesting take on the question.

  3. I guess Morinus is so ingrained in me since that was my first influence in astrology. Basically he says that a planet in a house is stronger than the ruler of the house. I have Astrosynthesis (the 21st book of his Astrologia Gallica) translated by Lucy Little (1974), where it appears in Part II, end of chapter I and beginning of Chapter II. Much more of the original book has also been recently translated by James Holden and published by the AFA. It is very dense material, but well worth the time.

  4. I’ve got to look into Astrologia Gallica one day. Had I but world enough, and time… and brain cells :-)
