Wherever you are, whenever you read this, at whatever level you practice or study, whenever you have time, I would love to know:

Why do you practice astrology? What’s your goal? How do you know when a reading has been successful?

I see astrology as a model of the universe and/or my soul, and practice it in order to navigate my way through life most ably. My goal is to lessen negative outcomes and to promote positive outcomes. I generally don’t do “readings” but have been paying attention to the planets and making notes about cycles as they relate to my chart etc since I was a teen.

    • That is very neat. I’ve never been organized enough to keep notes on “out there” vs. “in here” so it’s neat to know you do. Thanks for coming by.

Thanks for blogging! I’m a baby horarist (is that a word?!) but have been studying predictive astrology models of various sorts casually for a long time and want to add horary to my bag of skills. It’s very complex! I don’t quite have the knack for it, yet. Are there are books out there that are basically the original works of say, Lilly, but “translated” into modern English? I really hate struggling through both the concepts and the translating at the same time.

Originally, I came from a strong math/science background and had sought to disprove it. What actually happened was that I learned to cast charts and interpret them and after several (unbelievable to me) “direct hits” on specific issues, became RAVENOUS (as many do) for all I could learn. I became an astrological counselor and have been using Astrology to help people understand their needs, motivations, circumstances much more clearly for 20 years now. As for successful, if the client is better armed for the future and is HOPEFUL, then it’s “successful.”

    • Got it, so a positive client experience is important. Is there a point in the consultation when astrology moves off to the side and counseling takes over, or is it mostly astrology?

Personally it feels my need to learn and to know.
My goal is to do better predictions always.
As my main practice is with horary, is usually by feedback from clients. Of course, they usually don´t bother to feedback you in what happened months later, but sometimes they do.

    • This is why I practice, too: I want to know if it works, and I want to get better at giving helpful, correct readings.
A modern astrologer I know told me yesterday that her goal is to “facilitate emotional catharsis.” I was alarmed.

  4. Jennifer Says:

I don’t give readings, but I mostly study astrology for the psychology/karmic aspects.

  5. I practice astrology because I am good at nothing else! LOL.
Seriously, after detesting the art of foretelling at first, I got hooked at around 24yrs of age, after having been coerced to replace a vanished teacher (God’s ways truly are wonderfull!).
I feel good about a reading when a client feels deeper feelings or urges, confirmed by it and feels fortified to go his/her Destiny…

Hilarious! I doubt that, Herman :-)

Do your readings incorporate much counseling, or do you stick with what the chart says? How do you balance astrology and counseling (if any)?

  6. PFN Says:

I practice astrology cause I was deeply disatisfied with the course of things in my life. And I wanted to know how and why it turned like that. I do not charge my readings, and never will, but I do not have the wish to help anyone else besides myself, and the only reason for me to give other’s reading is to sharp my own techniques so I can know everything I wish beforehand, and seldom be taken by surprises. I hate surprises even more than things turning out wrong.

    • Thanks for commenting. I’m glad you’ve found your way to my blog, and I’m looking forward to visiting the Skyscript forums more and learning from you and the others there.

  7. Rox Says:

Well, I don’t really practice astrology (I don’t read charts to people, although from time to time I look at a friends chart and I tell him or her ‘Oh, you have Jupiter conjunct your MC, that’s a great aspect’); I actually use it for myself, to understand myself better. I read my chart, think about transits and look for their confirmation in reality. Also, I use astrology to know more things about the Universe, planets, symbols and try to open myself to different ways of knowing. One thing I noticed since I started reading astro books is that my perception of divinity changed. I believe in God, but not in the strict, dogmatic way. I try to include spirituality in my definition, I try to learn more about other religions and it makes me feel free, wihtout making me feel Godless to say so. It’s interesting, I don’t now if I’ll ever use astrology for other people because my experience is not that rich. I am only 21 and I’ve been reading about astrology since I was 18-19, but not constantly. Sometimes I didn’t understand a certain aspect and I would come back to it months later and it seemed easier. Also, I don’t have friends interested in astrology much, so everything I read kind of stays with me.

    • 21! Perfect, keep studying. And astrology is all over the place online, so even if you don’t have friends now who are into it, you will soon if you keep looking for communities & like-minded people “out here.” Depending on where you are, you might even find some local astro lectures or conferences you can attend – try geocosmic.org/chapters to see whether there’s a group near you.
I think that recognizing the divine order behind the cosmos may be the most important reason to study astrology.

  8. Beth Says:

Why? Long story. Short version: because I have too
Goal: Make astrology accessible to everyone
How do I know if a reading is successful? When the client contacts me and says “I didn’t believe you, but everything you said came true”

    • Beth, thanks for stopping by with this. “Because I have to” – yes, it can really come down to this, can’t it? I do it because I can, and sometimes because I must. And there’s no thrill like great feedback from a client.

  9. Andrei Tzadde Says:

Hello. I’m studying astrology since I was 16, but more seriously from 4 years ago, now I’m 23 (getting close to 24).

    - Why do you practice astrology?
Because I was curious at first, and as curiosity was growing, I wanted to know more and more, then I woke up with more knowledge than I thought I could have. :D By now, I practice astrology because it’s fulfilling to me and to others (at least, I hope so).

    - What’s your goal?
Prediction, knowledge and accuracy. Not necessarily in that order.

    - How do you know when a reading has been successful?
When someone tells me that everything I said came true.

  10. Are there are books out there that are basically the original works of say, Lilly, but “translated” into modern English?

Sort of – try John Frawley’s Horary Textbook. He’s very faithful to Lilly’s methods, with the advantage of being very readable and often even humorous. Not a straight translation per se, and that’s good, because John has spent years working out which bits work and which bits you can overlook.
